...So my sweetheart and I were sitting around having our breakfast tea and we got to talking about the book she's been meaning to write. She decided, this being the Eve of the Day, that her resolution was to actually begin it.
As it happens, I only managed to complete the first two drafts of my forthcoming novel by getting up an hour earlier, six days a week, and writing for an hour, hell or high water, even if "writing" simply consisted of staring at a blank page for 55 minutes of it. So I blathered on about the necessity of scheduling specific time accordingly, and she indulged me (this is not necessarily a new or earth-shattering notion).
Then I went to check my e-mails. There was only one, and it was from Caroline, a blog-friend, and the purpose of her e-mail was to share the following quote:
"We will open the book.
Its pages are blank.
We are going to put words on them ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity
and its first chapter is New Year's Day."
-- Edith Lovejoy Pierce
So I pass this on to all of you, in acknowledgement of the idea that we are in fact in constant conversation with the universe, whether we're conscious of it or not.
And as a human being who's experienced a virtual godsend of good fortune in the tail end of this past year (to sell a book is one thing, but to be able to celebrate same with someone you can call "my sweetheart" almost defies the parameters of reality as I'd come to know it), I can tell you that yes, 90% of success is showing up, and/but true: miracles do happen in this life.
May your new year be even half as happy as mine is, because then it will be a joyful one, indeed.
