I'd say you hit the nail on the head with this analysis. People don't need complex, they just need cute. In a case where there are 20 people sharing scenes no one scene will be long enough to lose the audience.
With all that's goign on it seems reasonable that simpelr will do better.

The issue I see is that superhero movies get the best writers but that may be because they cost more. Something like V-Day was probably $40M so it'll make it's money back by next week - well minus the theaters.

I have to admit, I caved in and went to see it. I didn't have high hopes; I was hoping to see something light and amusing like Love, Actually.

Even my low expectations were disappointed. How hard would it have been to have given this cast (most of whom I'm actually NOT all that crazy about) some decent storylines?

HOW HARD would that have been?

I WISH I could have read the script in it's original version. Could it have been any better? Or was it just pure cheese from the beginning?

I saw "Valentine's Day" at the Bonney Lake Multiplex last night. Place was packed -- with kids! Teenagers. Boyfriend and girlfriend types. More of 'em than you could shake a stick at. WHY? Because "Valentine's Day" is a date movie, and kids are still intrested in romance, albeit in their own 21st Century way.

I didn't think the cumulative story as whole held up. This is the kind of show you need to go into hoping to savor some of its pieces. "Valentine's Day" reminded me of a poor man's "Love Actually."

The Shirley McClaine/Hector Elizondo kissing against the backdrop of a 40s/50s movie screen pair kissing, was strangely akin to the Hugh Grant/Martine McCutcheon "Natalie" kissing behind the curtains at the high school musical. "Valentine's Day" cute kid pursues love didn't work half as well it did in "Love Actually" either.

What I LOVED the most about "Valentine's Day" was the star power brought in to do an ensamble romantic comedy; shows stars still want to do romantic comedies -- AND they're aware of what's worked in the past and are drawn to it...

An Anne Hathaway/Topher Grace pairing - IS TO DIE FOR! Wish I could have seen that in a different context, as stars in a romantic comedy vehicle staring them. Also kinda liked what Ashton Kutcher brought to the table. Jessica Biel left me wanting to see more of her on screen as well.

Though I'm NOT SAYING "Valentine's Day" is classic, I kinda liked it.

Engineers get frustrated because they want to design a solution that will impress other engineers; but, the public wants cup holders, more memory and Post-Its. This may be a cup holder subgenre that could turn into something if someone figures out that even more money can be made by doing it well.

I'm a sucker for ensemble romantic comedies, so I've been anticipating this one for a while. It was about what I expected (I'm well aware of when I'm entertaining a guilty pleasure as opposed to seeing a truly quality film). I actually enjoyed HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU quite a bit, but I could tell even from the trailer that VALENTINE'S DAY wouldn't be hitting even that bar (let alone a classic in the ensemble rom-com genre like LOVE ACTUALLY).

The problem wasn't any of the stories, per se -- it was that there were too many stories. There were about four different movies in VALENTINE'S DAY that I would have liked to have seen on their own. There simply wasn't any time to invest in any of the stories. Instead of connecting, the audience witnesses some nice moments, has a few chuckles, and that's it.

I didn't find it offensive as so many critics did (or "the death of cinema," as ScriptShadow called it). I simply looked at it as another Valentine's Day confection: sweet and familiar to the palate, if fleeting and a little obnoxious. Of all the rom-com horrors out there (THE UGLY TRUTH, anyone?), VALENTINE'S DAY seems pretty harmless.

When a comic book movie makes money, you can bet more comic book movies will get made. Same thing for rom-coms.

Say what you want about the movie, but the fact that it made so much money is a good thing. Hopefully better rom-coms will come of it.

No doubt this movie is lousy ! Anne Hathaway shined the most in this film (leaving Julia Roberts in her dust). She may be the most charismatic young actress in Hollywood. Hathaway brought so much needed energy & spark to her scenes- that it lifts the mediocrity of this movie.

E.C. Henry from Bonney, I agree the best duo was Topher & Anne. They seemed like they were having the most fun of all the couples in this movie. Their physical & comedic ( and dramatic) chemistry were incredible. I hope the massive box office success of this movie will inspire Hollywood producers to find prestige projects for this duo. I truly want to see more of Topher on the big screen because he was brilliant in " Traffic" & " In Good Company".

P.S. the multi-talented Ms. Hathaway was beyond splendid (wonderful acting , singing, & Long Island accent) as Princess Penelope in the recent 450th episode of "The Simpsons" One of the best "Simpsons" episodes in years. This lovely & charming episode paid homage to Audrey Hepburn and her past romantic films. It was better written & acted than most romantic comedies movies in the past few years.

This kind of formula has been successful before -- and longer ago than Love, Actually and He's Just Not That. You know what this looks like? A bunch of episodes of Love American Style all mashed together. but without JoAnne Worley and Paul Lynde.

There's the rub. It's not really a movie is it. It's just something Hollywood wants us to believe is a movie.

Date + gorgeous ensemble? Isn't that, really, just "spend time with beautiful people at a better party than the one your friends are likely to be having on V-day".

It's fun, it's visually pleasing, it's wish fulfilment - but it's not a movie.

Edie: How hard, indeed? Well, for starters you would have to have had a genuinely intriguing, emotionally felt IDEA that you passionately wanted to explore... as opposed to: How do we capitalize on this holiday?

J: The script was cheese from the get; adding stars just melted it.

Ms. Ditty: Well, almost anything next to THE UGLY TRUTH looks pretty, but your point is well taken. I agree with your too-many prognosis (this is really obvious when you read it on the page, since it's hard to track so many characters); my more emotional "aurgh" about this movie is about the missed opportunities (i.e. what you could do with half that cast, if you had a really good, thematically resonant story...!).

Shelly: I'm with you, re: Hathaway. The camera likes her.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not supporting V-Day.

After five years working out 80's attitude-driven plot structure, I'm appalled by the shallow plotted drivel dominating the big screen today.

All form - no story substance. How can an industry that was so right - have gone so wrong!?

My only consolation is: put V-Day into the structure pattern of the greats - and V-Day's full of holes.

Here's to the mernitman: if it's drivel - he spots it everytime!

You know it's bad when you see a movie for free and want your money back. That was us. Both of us wanted to run from the Writers Guild Theatre, but unfortunately, neither of us spoke up, so we saw the whole, wretched thing.
